One of the main driving forces for top-down nanofabrication is to control the light–matter interaction in metamaterials and to improve the optical and transport properties of materials by exploiting quantum effects. Spectroscopy and imaging at the large facilities SLS and SwissFEL are important tools to obtain an understanding of the structures thus created, and complement our "small laboratory" explorations of device functionality.
